Antonio Pelayo’s ‘El Velorio’ Take Over Pico Rivera Sports Arena

Artist, taste-maker, and overall chingon, Antonio Pelayo celebrated the 11th anniversary of ‘El Velorio‘ a celebration of Dia de Los Muertos at Pico Rivera Sports Arena on Saturday, November 6th.

The all-night event which started at 6 pm and ended at 1 am featured a fashion show, art exhibit, a lowrider car show, custom motorcycles, altars (honoring those who have passed), and three music stages. The musical artists included Angel NG, Twixxy, Palenke Soultribe, La Junta, El Meneaito, 90s by Nature, and Regional Mexican superstar El Dasa.

Celebrating its eleventh anniversary, El Velorio is a celebration of life, although it is a Dia de Muertos event, people of all ages, ethnicities, backgrounds come together to celebrate those who have passed and those who are still alive. Prior to the event, we spoke to Pelayo and asked him what it meant to celebrate Dia de Muertos, this is what he said…

The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality. It largely originated in Mexico, where it is mostly observed, but also in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, Pelayo had to find a new venue and he did, a spectacular event that the entire family can enjoy, El Velorio will return for its 12th anniversary in 2022, stay tuned for more information as it is announced.
