FOX Crowns First Digital Superstar on ‘Alter Ego’

The wait is over, after months of competition, FOX’s all-new singing competition, Alter-Ego has crowned a winner.

Jake Thomsen aka Dipper Scott took home the grand prize of $100,000 and will be mentored by the judges (Will.I.Am, Alanis Morissette, Grimes, and Nick Lachey).

The runner-up and the person/alter ego we thought would win it all was Kyara Treteault aka Seven.

Let’s be honest for a bit, Alter-Ego is a groundbreaking new series, a singing competition where lost dreams and second chances are reignited when singers who don’t fit the traditional mold become the stars they’ve always wanted to be, but something felt off.

We were part of the audience during the tapings of Alter-Ego and we can confirm that the energy when the contestants performed was electric, neither the audience nor judges knew who the contestants were up until the reveal, it was special. Watching the competition on television something felt off, maybe it came down to editing, but everything felt rushed, it was as if we didn’t have enough time to get to know the contestants. The Alter-Egos are awesome, but the connection with the actual person was a bit off, that’s just our opinion.

Let’s talk season two, will Alter-Ego return? It’s up in the air, if we were the execs at FOX, we would bring it back, there were other singing competition shows that came back, that didn’t deserve to (*cough* The Four *cough*). We don’t know if the execs at FOX will read this, but if Alter-Ego returns, this is what we would do differently:

  • Meet the Alter-Egos/Contestants episode – Much how FOX does with The Masked Singer when they reveal the contestants, do the same with Alter-Ego, and hour long episode where we meet the contestants and they talk about their Alter-Ego.
  • Forget the judges vote, focus on the audience vote – It’s great to have judges, but they should just stick to judging, do it like The Masked Singer, have the audience decide who the best Alter-Ego of the episode is.
  • Cover songs are great, but have contestants sing originals – This is a bit of a streatch, but we love when contestants sing their original songs, we all know that songs need to be approved for singing competitions, so instead of dealing with all that hassle, why not just have contestants perform originals?
  • Judges interact with the Alter-Egos – This is one thing we really wanted to see, the judges maybe performing a duet with the Alter-Ego, obviously they won’t meet the contestants, but with technology and editing, they can come together on stage or maybe even a music video

Will Alter-Ego return for season two? Who knows, but let’s hope this show is given a second chance!
