Compton’s very own, Kendrick Lamar brought the fireworks with his highly-anticipated “Not Like Us” video.
Directed by Dave Free and Lamar, the video features iconic Compton landmarks like City Hall and Tam’s Burgers, plus we see Lamar cruising the streets in a Porsche. The video also features cameos from YG, Roddy Ricch, Big Hit, TDE’s Punch, and an epic dance battle featuring Tommy the Clown.
The cameos and showcasing the Compton landmarks are great, but the visuals are even better. Lamar takes a swing at an owl-shaped piñata with a disclaimer that reads “no OV-H**s were harmed during the making of this video,” but one of the best moments of the video comes when we see Lamar’s family. In May, Drake released a track called “Family Matters” that included unconfirmed claims of Lamar abusing his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and claiming that one of Lamar’s kids was fathered by his longtime collaborator Dave Free, hence the reason why Lamar co-directed the video with Free. Lamar’s family having a brief cameo and Free co-directing the video, that right there is legendary.
