Jimmy Humilde Visited Harvard University to speak about Music, Identity and Latin community

Jimmy Humilde, founder and CEO of the influential record label Rancho Humilde, was the key note speaker for the event INTO THE MUSIC, which took place at Harvard University and organized by Harvard-Radcliffe Raza and NEON16, where he shared his vision regarding Mexican music, Chicano identity, and the role of the Latin community in the United States.

During the conversation, Humilde reflected upon the cultural impact of Rancho Humilde, the label he founded in 2007 in Compton, California, with José Becerra –-JB–- and Roque Venegas, and that currently has more than 60 artists in its catalog, including Fuerza Regida, Natanael Cano, Junior H, Oscar Maydon, and Herencia de Patrones. In the last few years, the label has become a key platform for transforming the tradition of Mexican music, bringing it to new international stages and challenging handed down cultural expectations.

Humilde said during the event:

I didn’t go to college, but I totally understand the crucial role that academia fulfills in our society.

As Latinos, we all have a responsibility in the fight for the recognition of our roots, our traditions, and our culture. It’s critical that more young people in our community access quality education at universities such as Harvard. That not only opens doors on an individual level, but it also makes us stronger as a community.

INTO THE MUSIC was organized by Harvard-Radcliffe Raza, one of the oldest and most active student-led Latino organizations on campus, dedicated to promoting cultural pride, activism, and the representation of Chicano and Latino students. On its part, NEON16 is an incubator and a creative collective founded by Tainy and Lex Borrero, renowned for driving innovation in music and Latin culture globally.
